Oasis is managed and run by KPB Institute of Gerontology, registered under Company Registration Act-1956 and in assistance with a society for care of the senior citizen along with its other services.

This is the 1st comprehensive residential enclave for assisted living for elderly, Dementia and those suffering from Alzheimer's in eastern India.

The challenge posed by Dementia as a health, economic and social issue is of a scale we can no longer ignore. Despite the magnitude, there is gross ignorance, neglect and scarce services for people with dementia and their families. We now have a range of options to treat the symptoms of Dementia and offer practical help to those affected persons.

To meet the challenge of Dementia in eastern India, the initiative has been taken and this is a significant step forward in Dementia care movement in our zone.

The initiative has been initiated for the sole reason that there are more than 3.7 million Indians with Dementia and the total societal cost is about 14,700 Crore.

The numbers are expected to double by 2030 with costs increasing three times.

A study conducted by Indian Centre for Medical Research (ICMR) in 2004 estimated that there are 46,000 people in Kolkata who suffer from Dementia, out of a total number of 80,000 such patients in West Bengal. Such number for the country has been assessed at 40 lakh in India in the same report.

The concept of assisted living is a residential facility for a group of elderly that does not perform as a nursing home, giving the inmates the feeling of being in a hospital setup which may have negative Psychological implications.

Assisted living can respond to elder's unscheduled needs for assistance. Assisted living is a good choice for seniors who need help with daily living, but do not require constant medical monitoring and care. In other words, assisted living is the best for people who need daily assistance but are not ready for a nursing home. They can continue to feel at home and remain within their daily routine and natural ambience and still remain under Medical and Nursing supervision. That way their daily needs are addressed without restricting them in any way.

To meet the challenge of Dementia in India the initiative has been taken. This is a significant step forward in Dementia care movement in our country.
